The Spanish match, both before and after its completion, was the main reason for the conspiracies of Mary’s reign. The marriage treaties, signed on 12 January 1554, were obviously designed in the hope of dispelling English fears about the match and indeed making it attractive. Spaniards were to hold no offices in England. Philip was not to involve England in his current war with France. He was to be given the title of king during Mary’s lifetime and might assist her in government, but his connexion with England was to end if she died childless. If they had children, their eldest son was to inherit England, the Netherlands, and Franche-Comté, and if Don Carlos, Philip’s son by a former wife, were to die without issue, Spain and its dependencies as well.42 That Philip had signed a secret protestation absolving himself from full observance of the treaties43 was not known in England.

42 The treaties are in Foedera, ed. Thomas Rymer (London 1726–35), xv. pp. 377–81,393–403.

43 Loades, Tudor Conspiracies, p. 18.
